During this weekend you will experience the beauty of the North Carolina coast as you participate in educational workshops and activities that will maximize your photography and OBX experience. The hotel is fantastic and has offered us a great rate and has blocked off rooms for us. You will have your choice to room alone or split the cost with another attendee, along with choice of an oceanfront or oceanside room. We will also utilize their private board room for our formal classroom-style workshops. In addition to formal workshops, you will participate in multiple on-site guided trainings; because learning by doing reinforces new skills. Each night will conclude with a reflection and question and answer session. Below you can read through our itinerary, workshop descriptions, and accommodation details.
Itinerary
Friday - Arrive at Sea Ranch Resort in Kill Devils Hill, NC where we will kick start our weekend with a formal workshop Foundations of Photography to refresh and reinforce important photography techniques. We will split into two groups for this workshop; beginners and intermediates so that everyone's needs are met. We want to start our trip with a strong foundation of skills to build on and ensure a successful experience. Friday night we will enjoy Sky Photography, a guided training during golden hour, sunset, and moonrise along the Avalon Pier and NC coastline.
Saturday - You can start your day bright and early with an optional blue hour/sunrise session or relax and sleep in then start with a formal Enhancing in Camera workshop happening late morning. Our morning will be filled with education to improve your images by utilizing your in-camera settings. At lunch time we will head to Ocracoke Island. We will take the ferry from Hatteras where you will participate in guided instruction on Birds in Flight Photography. In Ocracoke we will have a leisurely afternoon of North Carolina charm. You will be provided with a fun Composition Scavenger Hunt to complete at your leisure. We will finish with a sunset and moonrise night cap in Ocracoke before traveling back to our hotel.
Sunday - We are going to spice up sunrise with a few fun props. From wine glasses to sunglasses you will learn to incorporate the unusual with creativity during this fun Prop Photography activity. As we begin to wrap up our weekend, what better workshop to finish up with than Lightroom Basics. We will cover the develop module and focus on quick and easy edits to improve your workflow. Following checkout we will head to Nags Head Woods to capture fall foliage colors during our last stop before our photography adventure concludes.
Workshop Descriptions
*FT Formal Trainings will take place in a meeting room in the Sea Ranch Resort. These will be sit-down, classroom-style workshops with opportunity for questions and discussion.
*GT Guided Trainings will take place on location. Instruction, exercises, and mentoring will be provided.
*EE Educational Experiences will take place on location and are independent activities with instructions to get you started. You will learn by doing with materials provided.
Foundations of Photography *FT - A refresher course on camera settings and exposure. This will kick start our event and prepare you for a successful weekend of photography. This workshop will be offered at two levels, beginner and intermediate/advanced.
Enhancing in Camera *FT - Learn fun techniques to enhance your image in camera by making the most of your settings. Let's add that extra little something to your shot that will make it share-worthy straight out of camera.
Lightroom Basics *FT - You will enjoy this crash course in editing. Learn to how to successfully edit a photo quickly and efficiently. This workshop will include tips and tricks that will improve your editing skills and workflow.
Sky Photography *GT - Learn how to capture a beautiful sunset or sunrise image. We will cover important tips and tricks to improve your exposure, focus, and composition.
Birds In Flight *GT - How do you best photograph a bird in flight? Learn how to freeze motion, easy focus techniques, and quick composition tricks.
Composition Scavenger Hunt *EE - Search for different composition elements and stretch your creativity with this educational activity. Examples and explanation of composition elements to precede hunt.
Prop Photography *EE - During this sunrise activity fun and creative props will be provided to incorporate into your sunrise photography. Items included will be picture frames, wine glasses, and mirrors.
Instructors
Jen has always had a passion for art. She offers a large range of photography from landscapes to portraits on location or in studio. She has started a very successful meetup Naptown Photo. Her scavenger hunts have become a big hit and will often draw upwards of 50 participants. She has also created a photography Facebook page dedicated to Maryland Beauty. This page has experienced immense growth and has proven to be a huge tool for exposure for upcoming photographers in the Maryland area. Jen's goal with her Facebook pages and her meet up group is to foster a sense of community among local photographers. Jen is also a 'Maryland in Focus' photographer for the Maryland Office of Tourism. You will often see her landscapes of the Annapolis area highlighted on their social media. Jen is also very active on her personal photography Facebook page and shares local images daily. If you are looking for her you will probably find Jen sharing her passion for photography at social meet ups, teaching workshops or speaking at a local camera clubs.
Accommodations
The Sea Ranch Resort in Kill Devil Hills, NC
I have blocked 10 rooms at the Sea Ranch Resort. Five are Double Occupancy Oceanfront rooms with two queen beds that overlook the beach. The other five are Double Occupancy Oceanside rooms that might or might not have a partial view of the ocean. These rooms also have two queen beds. Other rooms are available at the resort including Oceanfront singles with king beds but are dependent upon availability. These rooms are offered at a discounted rate and are blocked off until September 10th at which time they will be released to the general public and the discounted price will no longer apply.
Oceanfront Double Bed Single Occupancy $90 per night per person + tax and fees
Oceanfront Double Bed Shared Occupancy $50 per night per person + tax and fees
Oceanside Double Bed Single Occupancy $70 per night per person + tax and fees
Oceanside Double Bed Shared Occupancy $40 per night per person + tax and fees
The prices above do not include tax and fees. As people sign up and preferences are expressed I will help facilitate arrangements. A deposit of one night stay is required by the hotel to make a reservation.
Payment
Pay only $319 if you sign up and pay in full by April 1st, 2016*. When you pay in full your spot is guaranteed. If you are interested in breaking up your payments you can pay a $200 dollar deposit now to hold your spot then pay the remaining balance of $169 on or before April 15th. If you choose a payment plan your spot is reserved for you. If you have not paid in full by April 15th your spot and deposit will be forfeited.
*A savings of $50 dollars is only eligible for attendees who pay in full before April 1st.
